The Difference Between Fashion Buying & Fashion Merchandising

Published on 07 Feb, 2023

Retail buying and retail merchandising are two very different roles in the fashion and homeware industry, yet they are both vital to a retailer.

Fashion Buyers

Fashion buyers are responsible for retail buying and selecting the items sold in stores. Buyers will undertake extensive research and deeply understand the fashion industry, from the catwalk to the high street.

When a fashion buyer is looking for stock to purchase, they will research and predict new trends, negotiate with suppliers and analyse sales data to decide what items should be bought for the forthcoming seasons.

Being a fashion buyer in a retail buyer role is an enjoyable job for those who live and breathe fashion, but it should never be mistaken for easy work. Retail buying is vital to a business, and their choices will ultimately dictate what customers can buy in the upcoming season; as fun as it is, retail buying also comes with a lot of responsibility.

Fashion Merchandisers

Fashion merchandisers are the people who make the purchases come to life; once the retail buying has been done, it’s up to the people working within retail merchandising to get the most out of the new stock.

Fashion merchandisers have a big responsibility, as when products are displayed and marketed well, they will convert into sales. Those working in retail merchandising will analyse the items bought in the retail buying process, select which they think will be the best sellers, and use their creativity to design collections and set prices.

Fashion merchandisers must have an analytical eye to send stock where it will sell best, as well as an understanding of marketing principles to create successful promotions.
